About UGC NET Exam
1. What exactly is the UGC NET exam?
UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a national-level exam conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency) in India. It determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for the posts of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
2. Who is eligible to apply for UGC NET?
Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in their Master's Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC in Humanities, Social Sciences, Computer Science, etc. (50% for reserved categories). Final year Master's students can also apply.
3. What is the exam pattern for UGC NET?
The exam consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2) conducted in a single three-hour duration. Paper 1 is common for all and consists of 50 questions (100 marks). Paper 2 is subject-specific and consists of 100 questions (200 marks). All questions are objective type (MCQs).
4. Is there any negative marking in the exam?
No, currently there is no negative marking for incorrect answers in the UGC NET examination. Each correct answer awards you 2 marks.
5. What is the difference between NET and JRF?
NET qualifies you for an Assistant Professor role. JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) qualifies you for Assistant Professor AND provides a monthly stipend from the government if you pursue a Ph.D. JRF has a higher cut-off score and an age limit (usually 30 years, with relaxations).
